Virtual Private Networks

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation's network. A VPN can be contrasted with an expensive system of owned or leased-lines that can only be used by one organisation.

The advantages of using VPNs over leased-lines include; Flexibility and Cost

VPNs with which all data between two office locations is sent via an encrypted tunnel are known as "site-to-site" VPNs. The other common implementation, is a VPN where all data between a single endpoint and an office location is sent via an encrypted tunnel; these are known as client-to-site or remote access VPNs.

There are two main protocols used to implement VPN topologies; IPSec and SSL.

Both have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the suitabliity of one technology over the other can vary from scenario to scenario. Contact us, and we'll be happy to discuss your requirements in more detail, and provide you with advice on what may be best suited to your needs.
